Music Families

Music Families series can be dated back to 1999. I looked at European religious paintings of the Renaissance period. There are always baby-like angel figures playing music instruments. I borrowed the images but transformed the bodies into instruments.

In 2008 I worked on this series again in an Ukiyo-e woodblock print project. Initiated by printer Eitaro Ogawa at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI), I made line drawings of the new Music Families set which were then carved by Kyoto-based woodblock carver/printer Shoichi Kitamura. We met up in Singapore to see the colour proofs of the prints in traditional Ukiyo-e style and technique. The project was finished and presented by the STPI in 2009.
